Norman Pedley Take a journey across the county of North Yorkshire and as you go take a look at the traditional farm buildings and cottages that you pass and you will notice some subtle changes. Across the North York Moors yellow sandstone walls with red pan-tile roofs dominate. But upon passing the A19 yellow stone is replaced by red brick. Continuing west beyond Bedale and Ripon slate replaces the pan-tiles, and these in turn are replaced by limestone walls with stone flags in the Pennine dales. In modelling terms representing the vernacular architecture helps to define and capture the character of the place one’s layout purports to be. My layout of a modern freight depot supposedly at Leeming Bar needed something older, to contrast the anonymous steel and cement clad warehouses, hence this project to build some farm barns based upon those at Church Farm, Sowerby …. I am open to suggestions as to how I might replicate the bricks, as Slater’s plastic card just will not do!
